Types of Men’s Leather Jackets Explained: Biker, Bomber, Racer, Aviator and More

“Leather jacket” is a category, not a single garment, and the differences between styles are far from cosmetic. Each cut was born for a purpose, and each flatters a different body type and wardrobe. Knowing the main families makes it far easier to choose a jacket that feels like it was made for you.

The biker (double-rider)

The most recognisable of all, the biker jacket is defined by its asymmetric zip, wide notched lapels, belted hem and abundance of hardware. Traditionally made from thick cowhide for protection, it reads as rugged and rebellious. It suits slim and athletic builds especially well because of its cropped, close cut, and it pairs naturally with jeans and boots. If you want a jacket with maximum attitude, this is it.

The bomber (flight jacket)

Descended from military aviator jackets, the bomber has a straight body, ribbed cuffs, collar and hem, and a symmetrical front zip. It is arguably the most versatile and forgiving style: the relaxed cut works on almost every build, and the clean lines slot easily into both casual and smart-casual outfits. Quilted and hooded variants add warmth and a contemporary streetwear edge.

The cafe racer

Minimalism defines the cafe racer. It has a simple band collar, a centre zip and very little hardware, giving it a sleek, understated look that leans smart rather than tough. Because it lacks the bulk of a biker, it layers beautifully under a coat and works well for men who want leather without an overtly rebellious statement. It is a natural choice with knitwear and clean sneakers.

The aviator and flight styles

The aviator is the cold-weather heavyweight — typically a thicker leather with a shearling or fox-fur collar and lining, built for genuine warmth. Its bold proportions make a strong winter statement and suit larger frames or anyone who wants presence. Related pilot and pilot-bomber styles keep the fur collar but slim the silhouette for city wear.

The field and coat lengths

Beyond the short jackets sit longer leather coats — car coats, trenches and single-breasted overcoats. These read as more formal and mature, offering coverage and a tailored silhouette that works over suits and knitwear alike. A black leather trench or car coat is a powerful choice for a man who wants sophistication rather than swagger.

Beyond jackets

The leather family extends further still: hooded leather sweatshirts that borrow from streetwear, patchwork and baseball-style jackets that add color and sport, and statement pieces trimmed in exotic skins or premium fur. These let you push into bolder territory once the classics are covered.

Matching style to you

As a rule of thumb: slim builds shine in bikers and racers; larger builds are flattered by bombers, aviators and coats; and anyone wanting versatility should start with a bomber or cafe racer in black or mid-brown. Choose the leather to match the mood — soft lambskin for refinement, heavier hides for ruggedness — and you have a jacket that fits both your body and your life.
